Brooklin Merchants players and coaches gathered at Luther Vipond Memorial Arena on Saturday afternoon for a spirited open tryout session. Good numbers and great energy as the team kicks off their 25th anniversary season.

Players and coaches from the Brooklin Merchants gathered at Luther Vipond Memorial Arena on Saturday afternoon for an open tryout session and the official kick off to their 25th anniversary season. The end of the 2024 season was disappointing as the team came just short of an Ontario championship and a chance to travel to Ladner B.C. for the Presidents Cup.

Team veteran, Ed Renaud said “last season was tough, it’s a competitive league and we have a chip on our shoulders after losing to Six Nations. "

Renaud added, “the message for this year, it’s time to work, every other team has talented players and it’s never easy."

As for the 25th anniversary celebration, he said “it’s a big deal and we want to make it a memorable one.”

The turnout for the Saturday session was good with a mix of veterans and rookies taking to the floor for the two-hour workout. Head coach, Ryan Degerdon and assistant coach, Mark Debrone had their charges engaged in drills, runs and a “blue and white game” for the final 20 minutes to provide a game-like feel for the players. The game was punctuated by a solid back and forth effort from both sides.

The team will start the season with two games on the road, May 4 in Meaford against Owen Sound and May 10 in Ohsweken against the Six Nations Rivermen. The home opener for the Merchants is scheduled for Mother’s Day, Sunday May 11 at 6:00 p.m. when they host the Collingwood Cruisers at Iroquois Park Sports Centre, the location of all Merchants home games this season.

The highlight of the 25th anniversary season will be hosting the Presidents Cup, emblematic of Canadian Sr B lacrosse supremacy, at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby from August 23-30, 2025.
