The Brooklin Merchants packed up their gear for the trek to the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena tonight. It was their second road game of this young season.

A trip to Meaford last weekend resulted in a 10-6 loss to Owen Sound. Fast forward a week and it was worth the drive as they came away with an impressive 8-6 win over the Six Nations Rivermen.

“We had a slow start tonight as a handful of guys were late arriving due to traffic and the warm-up was low energy”, said Assistant Coach Mark Debrone.

The Rivermen took the first period by a score of 3-2 and the Merchants took the intermission to regroup and settle into the game.

It would be a successful middle frame that would be the difference tonight and ultimately led to the win. At the 2025 Major Series Lacrosse entry draft, the Brooklin Lacrosse Club selected Will MacLeod with their first pick, second overall. MacLeod made his debut tonight and tallied for a hattrick in that second period. The Merchants outscored their hosts 4-1 in that frame and took a 6-4 lead into the third.

“The defense was doing all the right things and the O started to move the ball. We outplayed them in the second period and the training that we did paid off as the rink was hot and we took it to them”, added Debrone.

The teams tied the final period 2-2 and the Merchants took the 8-6 win to move to a 1-1 record on the year.

They will open at home on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. against the Collingwood Cruise for a Mother’s Day game where all ladies will be admitted free. The new turf surface has been installed and as an added bonus, the Booster Lounge will be open serving cold beer thanks to a partnership with BarDown Gastropub at Iroquois Park Sports Centre.
